The Queen’s 9 Royal Nuggets For Your Business

by Steven Hourston on June 12, 2012

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations revealed 9 royal nuggets for all business owners.

Keep it simple
On her 21st birthday Princess Elizabeth broadcast a simple, yet powerful message.

“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and to the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”

The “imperial family” reference sounds Victorian and way out of date. It just shows how much has changed. Ignoring that, the message is still relevant today.

How clear is your message?

Enlist Support
In her next breath she immediately sought support.

“But I shall not have strength to carry out this resolution alone, unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do.”

And during her long reign she’s needed her fair share of support.

Who can you turn to in good times and bad?

No message can survive the test of time unless it set on the rock solid foundations of your core values and beliefs.

Avoid glib slogans that endlessly change on the shifting sands of what you think your customers want to hear.

Be true to yourself and let your authenticity act like a magnet to attract and keep customers

Deliver on your promises
Having made such a public promise, the Queen has delivered.

During the jubilee celebrations most commentators marvelled at the Queens dedication to fulfil her declaration. And she’s done it day in day out for 60 years.

How many of us come close to that level of commitment?

Bounce Back
We all face criticism and have to deal with mistakes and setbacks. Bounce back quickly and with dignity.

Embrace Change
Your business will thrive or fail in a world of accelerating change. The Queen may not have set a blistering pace in tackling change, but she has successfully adapted over 60 years to remain relevant.

The Queens popularity has ebbed and flowed. Many people love her and some loathe the institution she represents. But she consistently wins admirers with her charm and courtesy.

Is your reputation enhanced by the way you deal with all enquiries? Do you charm or sometimes offend?

Retain Some Mystique
Listen and always seek to understand. Show you genuinely care and offer your service when it’s appropriate. Just don’t go overboard; most of your customer’s aren’t interested in your personal life.

Recharge Your Batteries
The Queen recharges her batteries at Balmoral castle in Aberdeenshire. She once nearly ran me over when I was hiking on her estate, but that’s another story.

How do you keep yourself fresh, relaxed and raring to go?

My own youthful republican beliefs have mellowed. Who would want the constant scrutiny and rigid protocol of the Queens existence? Not me. And the thought of a popularity-seeking, sound-bite driven politician rising to a presidential role fills me with dread.

I admire the Queen and respect her devotion to do her duty. She sets an example that should be copied by all aspiring business owners.
